Today I went to the open market. I have ever loved to go there. I remember when my grandmother used to bring me to the open market. Then we used to fill her cart with tones of products. Even underwear she used to buy to me. I loved everybody shouting, smiling, offering me the fruits to try, loved to ask for discounts and the cheaper princes in the end of the day. After filling the cart until the top I loved to seat on the sidewalk enjoying a pastel (typical fried food from Brazil) and to drink sugar cane’s juice with lots of ice and lemon. I grew up. Then early in the morning, on my way back from the carnival nights, I used to stop by the open market to recover from the drinks by eating pastel and drinking sugar cane’s juice. I have spent two years abroad, enjoying the open markets in other places in Europe. Without the pastel or the sugar cane, but still with happy shouting people and all the fun one can get in the open market. I loved it all. Now I am back in Brazil.

Today I went to the open market. But I did not find an open market. Instead, I found only four tends, one selling fruits, another with the vegetables, the third selling fish and the last selling pastel. They might were occupying no more than 30m side by side along the street. None was shouting. Few were smiling. There was no negotiation or sugar cane juice. I bought a broccoli and a pastel. I carried the broccoli easily on a bag and brought the pastel to be eaten at home. I felt sad. Sad because I noticed one more time people left the public space to lock their selves in super houses, condominiums and malls. I realized that since I arrived here (less than one week ago) I have been already three times on a shopping mall. And I hate shopping malls. Actually I found the ‘survivor’ open market on the way to the fruit’s mall. I want to come back to the streets, to meet the neighbors, to fill my cart with so many items that it becomes impossible to carry. And in the end, I simply want to seat on the side walk, with my pastel and a huge sugar cane juice with lots of ice and lemon.
